Summer heat... Sweeter berries... Earlier picking

8/3/2017

It has been a great year for blueberries! All 5 varieties are still producing well. The cooler than normal winter means that the berry picking is lasting longer this year. The Liberty and Legacy bushes have just begun to produce and we expect them to continue for a couple of weeks. The Reka, Hardy Blue, and Blue Golds are still going strong. Best of all, the recent hot weather is causing the berries to get nice and sweet.

We are going to be closed on Friday, August 4th, but we will be open for our usual hours (9am-6pm) on Saturday and Sunday. With the recent heat, we recommend coming early for picking. As usual, you can call ahead to reserve flats and half-flats of your favorites.

See you soon!

First, some news: Blue Bee Farm has a new family as of the end of May. My name is Denise Nyman. My husband is Vic and our two daughters are Kirsten and Julia. All of us are excited to be at Blue Bee Farm. Sauvie Island is a special place and we feel very fortunate to be here. We look forward to meeting all of you in person!

The blueberries are looking great. We open for U-pick starting on Wednesday, July 5th! We will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from 9am to 6pm. Continuing the Blue Bee Farm tradition, we use only no-spray, organic farming practices.

The Reka variety blueberry bushes are heavy and the berries are turning deep blue! We will also have a few Hardy Blues and Blue Golds ready for picking by Wednesday. See you soon! - Denise, Vic, Julia, and Kirsten

ASIAN PEARS! This SUNDAY ONLY!

We will have 3 beautiful, crunchy varieties of Asian pears available this Sunday, August 14 from 9a-2p. These will be available already picked, they are not for u-pick. Please bring your own containers, or you can purchase boxes from us.
These are a family favorite. We love to core, slice, and dry them for an awesome treat. Sweeter than apples, great in cold storage, get ahold of these delightful fruits this Sunday, only! As always, our fruit is no spray, always organically managed! We will also have some veggies, and our merchandise is still 15% off until the stand closes. We still have library totes, farm totes, and a few sizes of men's and women's shirts in both styles.
Look forward to seeing you on the farm!

Another amazing blueberry season has come to an end. We have so enjoyed sharing the farm, the animals, and all the delicious fruit and veg with you this year. We're so grateful for every single person who comes to Blue Bee, and we especially love the relationships we develop year after year with you. This was the summer of the beautiful pregnant ladies! We can't wait to see you with your babes in arms next season. Watching your children grow- healthy and full of homegrown food and fresh air- alongside our own is such a wonderful honor. Thank you for including us on your summer fun list! We know your choices are many here in the Northwest, and we are so happy you chose us for "your" blueberry farm.

We will post when we have Asian Pears, tomatoes, and grapes, a bit down the road. But until then, take care and enjoy the rest of the summer!

(Bodie, Beauty, Harmony, and all of the chickens and ducks as well!)

It's STILL blueberry season!

We keep getting messages asking if we still have blueberries! I'm sure our guests from yesterday can attest, there are LOADS of fruit to pick! The Libertys are AMAZING right now. There is still strong picking in every variety! I believe someone picked nearly 30 pounds in the Blue Golds alone... The fruit set has been outstanding this year, and our plants are hanging strong, even in the heat.
It's looking like a very hot week. We've got ice water, shade, cold drinks, and beautiful picnic spots to chill out in, but make sure you bring a hat and some sunscreen. I'm sure no one is thinking of baking today, but what about some nice cold blueberry sorbet? Epicurious' Simply Blueberry Sorbet recipe looks easy and delicious. I would add some lemon zest, juice, and if you really want some zing, lemon extract to this. I'm a big fan of lemon and blueberry together.
I'm not doing a ton of baking or even making right now, but every day I make up a big bowl of granola and yogurt and walk out into the field to check things out. I toss blueberries into my bowl as I walk, and see what the varieties are up to. It's so interesting to see how they change over the picking cycle. I'm generally a Blue Gold gal, but recently, I've been all about the Libertys. The skins thicken a bit in the heat, and make them a bit toothier, and I really find it wonderful. The sugars condense and give them an even sweeter taste than the Legacys. Give them a try!
We think we'll have a week- maybe a week and a half- left in the field, so don't delay. Please feel free to check the Facebook feed, our Instagram or give us a call if you have questions.
See you on the farm!

We're opening the back field tomorrow! Legacy and Liberty varieties will both be open for picking, even though there is rain forecasted!
Liberty and Legacy, if you aren't familiar, are the largest varieties we grow- large, fruity, and meaty (how's that possible? I don't know, but its true!) these berries are super satisfying to pick!
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Weird (Perfect Picking) Weather!

7/9/2016

It's been a strange weather week here in Portland, but after last summer's scorching temperatures, I'm not complaining. The last few days have been cool and overcast, which for us mean that the berries aren't ripening as rapidly as they were and they are holding on the bushes longer. These are good things! It means our season will likely go a bit longer than last year, and the fruit won't get overheated like last July.
We're still picking in the front field- with an announcement about the lower field within a couple of days. We know a few of you (more?!) are waiting to hear about the Libertys and Legacys, so we won't delay!
I've been talking up pickled blueberries again, and want to make sure you have a link to our favorite recipe: Catherine's Pickled Blueberries. These are super delightful and worth the effort. Make sure you read ahead- it's a two day process, so be prepared.
The weather also means we've still got nice salad green, head lettuce, and squash. More produce is around the corner, so stay tuned for updates. The other excitement on the farm is that we have a new baby duck! NOTHING is cuter than a new baby duck, we've discovered. With the help of our duck mid-wife, Nik Hahn from Fang & Feather in Kenton, we're hoping to see the baby tagging along after mama very soon! We've never hatched babies on the farm, so this has been really exciting for the whole family. We're giving her a lot of space and having faith in her instincts. I'm trying not to be a total rationalist (read: buzz kill), but we're hoping the baby makes it- it's a jungle out there!
Come out and see us this weekend! We've got new jam on the stand in 3 varieties: Plain blueberry, blueberry with Madagascar vanilla bean, and blueberry lavender. All are made low-sugar with the help of Pomona's Pectin, organic sugar, lemon juice and our family grown blueberries.
Looking forward to seeing you on the farm!

Great Opening Week!

Thanks for making our opening week spectacular! We saw so many familiar faces and many new ones! The farm is looking great and the berries are plentiful. The Reka's are still coming strong, and are so very good this year. The Blue Golds have really surprised us this season. The small plants are deceptive- there is a ton of HUGE, beautiful, dusty blue fruit coming off of those little buggers! Everyone knows Blue Golds are my favorites, and I have been jealous watching giant bowlfuls of those huge tangy fruit pass by the stand! The Hardy Blues are also getting ripe and sweeter by the day. They are the perfect size and texture for baking. They hold their integrity in baked goods and their quintessential blueberry flavor is unbeatable in muffins and breads. We've got a couple of family members who don't do dairy or gluten, but we love quick breads. Our go to recipe is the Heavenly Blueberry Lemon Loaf, and Hardy Blues are the perfect berry. This is a quick, crumbly, delicious bread. You'll likely end up eating it with a spoon, but I never hear any complaints. Crush it over a little bit of coconut ice cream, and you're in business! If you have a bit more time and can handle flour, this Blueberry Buckle looks pretty fabulous too.
Happy Blueberry Baking!

Good News, Berry Lovers!

The berries are ripe and the fields are ready! The Rekas are delicious and sweet with all of this nice sunshine! Everyone here at the farm has been scurrying around getting the fields prepped and ready for your arrival. More shade tents, picnic tables, and so much fruit! We look forward to seeing all of our old berry-loving friends, and hoping to meet even more new faces this year. We have two new farm helpers, Mitch and Maggie. They've come all the way from Australia to help us pick berries, keep the place looking great, and greet visitors. Kat and Dave have been working tirelessly to get the farm into beautiful shape. The fruit looks and tastes amazing, and there is SO MUCH of it. I don't know about you, but this weather makes me want ice cream.
A blueberry regular turned me onto a simple dairy free dessert idea a few weeks ago, and I've been thinking about blueberry ice cream A LOT. Our friend simply pours coconut cream (and a bit of honey, if you'd like!) over frozen berries for a quick treat. I was thinking I'd take it to the next level with
Blueberry Lime Coconut Ice Cream! I haven't tried this one yet, but it's vegan and looks super easy and delicious.

Do you have any favorite blueberry recipes? Do you have any left in your freezer from last year? Time to use 'em up to make room for this season's crop!

So looking forward to seeing you all shortly! In the meantime, keep in touch via Facebook or our Instagram feeds! Look for giveaways and contests in the coming weeks!

Happy June!

Greetings, berry lovers!
We are in the process of getting the farm ready for picking as we speak. The berries are nearly there, but need a few more days for ripening. We want them to be as ripe, sweet, and delicious as you remember them from last season! The Rekas are coming on nicely, and the Hardyblues are right behind them. A few more days of warm weather will get us right where we'd like to be.

We will post here and on our Facebook and Instagram feeds when we set an opening date. Look for updates on pricing, hours, and days in the very near future!

We're looking forward to seeing you!
